Gnome Games and FIRST Robotics Present East Town Mall's Robotic Demonstration Day
What is FIRST?
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
The varsity sport for the mind, FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 student or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
There is also FIRST Tec (smaller robots but high school age competitions) and FIRST Lego League where students ages 9-14 build robots out of lego's and compete. There is also a Jr FIRST Lego League for ages 5-8. Last year 8 different Lego Leagues were funded through local contributions and students from local teams took on the roles of teachers and mentors to the younger kids.
Each year the competition is different and is released early in January. Teams then have 6 short weeks to build a robot designed specifically for the competition.
